Join us,
here is some more information and
membership
application forms.
Membership of the club is open to all. Although based around Portsmouth
there are many members who come from much further away, London, Reading
etc.. The Club does not have a fixed base but runs paddling activities
throughout the year. These are announced in the Newsletters and on the
Yahoo Group.
It does have some general purpose boats available for training sessions
and a roto-moulded ‘Avocet’ sea kayak which can be
hired for £10 per day. Eastney pool has been equipped with
boats by the Club for the winter pool sessions.
Throughout British Summertime there are outdoor training sessions at
Eastney on Monday evenings 7pm to dusk. These take place in Langstone
Harbour or just outside. The wide range of sea conditions and currents
coupled with easy launching whatever the height of the tide and the
relative safety of the harbour make this an ideal learning venue. Earn
your BCU 2* award over a few evenings.
There is a paddle every Wednesday evening during BST from 6.30pm to
dusk from locations around Portsmouth. Details are given in the
newsletter and on the Yahoo Group. These paddles continue throughout
the Winter months. Since these are in the dark, some experience is
required and an all round white light (or lights) visible from 360 degrees to comply with Marine Regulations.
Most Sundays throughout the year there is a day paddle. These are
graded: -
A - easy paddle of 6Nm or less at a slow pace or of the slowest paddler.
B - intermediate, more than 7Nm and a moderate pace.
C - regular paddlers 12 Nm and may involving open water crossings.
D - experienced paddlers only, may
include long open water crossings. A sea kayak is essential for C and D
trips.
Any paddling more than 1/2 Nm offshore requires BCU 2 star qualification and trip
leaders like to have paddled with participants beforehand.
Every year there are weekend trips to Devon, Cornwall, South Wales and
to white water venues. There are also longer club trips, to Brittany
and Sweden last year. Groups of members also attend the various
symposia and make longer trips to Scotland and further a field. Some of
us regularly surf local beaches and well known locations.
Winter indoor sessions are held at Eastney Pool for you to perfect your
roll or try out kayaking for the first time in warm clear water.
All this costs only £20 per year with a joining fee of
£3, juniors £10 and family membership £35.
